HEALTH AND SAFETY IN THE FIRE SERVICE – SEMINAR SERIES

Situational Awareness – Protecting Yourself Through Observation

This seminar will discuss how to become aware of your surroundings while still conducting emergency response operations. In the ever-changing environment of world today, whether in everyday life or in emergency situations, it is vitally important to be aware of everything around us. Much of our time is spent focused on a specific task or activity and we may lose site of dangers that may put us at additional risk. Discussions will include looking at normal everyday situations and emergency situations to identify potential causes of harm to the common citizen and first responders. These potential causes may be from accidents, natural causes/disasters or even terrorist activities.

The Toxic Twins – Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen Cyanide

This seminar will discuss fire science theory related to the formation of Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) during firefighting activities. The fire environment today, found in residential and commercial structures, has changed throughout the world due to the increase in synthetic and manufactured materials. Under incomplete combustion conditions, the Toxic Twins are both present and pose an exposure risk to fire service personnel.
